I’m a band geek, and had used these in classes before but never owned one. My kids’ distance learning for arts classes required that they have one so I chose this. Seemed simple and straightforward. Would you believe I had to look up instructions?!? None came with it.So for those of you like me:There is a black plug on the base of the unit. Remove that and the clear cover. Wind it on the right, and then you just ease the “ticker” out from behind the plastic tab at the top. Pull out the plunger on the side to change the timing, and move the ring up and down on the “ticker“ to make it count faster/slower as you like. When done, just replace the ticker behind the tab and replace the cover.Counts great, and kids enjoy it. The only negative I have found is it’s quite loud. When performing a tune, have to place it in another room to tone it down a bit.The quality is good and it works well. I like iteasy to use. just right. worried the kids will break it but the product is goodI have been using more than three months. So far it works very well.Works as described. Loud but not overbearingI have one of those digital metronomes and I am ready to stomp on it or throw it against the wall. This mechanical machine is far far better: the sound is complementary rather than annoying, you can set a bell to emphasize certain beats, the instructions aren't maddening like with the electronic metronomes (in fact there are no instructions so remember to remove the pin on the bottom!) and I love the visual cues of the swinging arm. A terrific value, highly recommended.I like it a lot. Simple. Easy to use. Functional. Light. Works great. However, it’s so loud that I’m afraid it may impair my hearing in the long run. Couldn’t find any way to turn it down, even after putting it in a closet. For this reason, I have to return the product. If Amazon has a similar item with a volume control, I’d be happy to buy.Very good for the price. I was very pleased.I have no idea how to set or use this. I assumed it would come with instructions. Unfortunately I opened it too late to return. But it is absolutely useless to me as is. I am hoping to find instructions elsewhere but for $30 and an Amazon product you would have thought they would have included instructions in how to set it. INCREDIBLY DISAPPOINTED. I]I couldn’t find my electronic metronome, so I replaced it with this. It worked perfectly out of the box, once I realized that I had to pull the large plastic plug out of the base to release the mechanism. People complaining that their unit didn’t work out of the box probably didn’t do this simple thing.Recommended.If there is a way to control the volume, I haven't found it yet. But still I find the rest of the device perfect for my purposes. It is possible to generate a chime for a given number of swipes if desired although this is not a feature that I use. My device arrived in perfect condition. Not a single scuff, chip, or scratch of any kind at all.Best used in a classroom situation where you want someone in the back to hear the beat as clearly as people in the front. For a smaller space this device clicks very loudly, too much so if you need to keep the volume down to avoid disturbing others. The slide moves stiffly but at least the marker stays in place. There are no instructions that come with this metronome but it'll only take a couple of minutes to figure out.
